What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across college and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. (Roaming is available to staff and students at Carshalton College) ( (

What is my eduroam realm name also known as your username and password?

For staff your login name is

password is your login password that you use at college.

What areas of College are covered by Wireless?

Coverage in M Block, L Block, C Block, Student Common Room, N Block, Learning Centre. However there maybe some black spot areas.

How do I get access to eduroam?

You will need to follow the instructions found here. You also need to ensure that your computer meets the hardware requirements set out in the question below.

Is eduroam a free service?

Yes, there is no charge for use of the wireless network facility.

Who runs eduroam?

The wireless eduroam service at the Carshalton College is managed by the IT Team at the college.

What hardware is required for access to eduroam?

The hardware requirements of eduroam are:

* A Computer/laptop running Windows Vista/7/8, Linux, Apple Mac Or a Mobile with 802.1x support.
* A 802.11n or above Wireless Network Card (Wifi-Certified)

What software is required?

If you have a Windows Vista/7/8 or Apple Mac OSX computer then no additional software to the OS is required for access to eduroam. It is highly recommended that you have Antivirus Software installed on your computer. It is also worth having a software based firewall installed on your computer.

What limitations are there on use?

Web filtering for home and visitor users is transparent and no device configuration is necessary. Unfortunately, certain restrictions and limitations have to be in place in regard to access to the Internet from the Wireless. These limitations are necessary for the security of the network and of all users of the College Network. Limitations you need be aware of are:

  • Extremist Groups
  • Hacking
  • Gambling
  • Proxy Avoidance
  • Gambling
  • Nudity and Risque
  • Other Adult Materials
  • Pornography
  • Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
  • Malicious Websites
  • Phishing
  • Spam URLS

Also speed restrictions has been enabled for all wireless users accross the college.
